CLXII: Foot in Mouth Syndrome

I asked Jeff to write a scene that had Noah and Flint, the two main characters that hadn’t yet been written into the chapter. After a little back and forth we came up with this brief “action sequence”.

This is the first UTC story to span more than two days. We’ve gone almost a full school week at this point. (Flashbacks don’t count.)

Keris is walking by the auditorium she almost burned down, last seen back in Chapter 1.

The title echoes Ash’s comment from page VII.

Noah’s conversation with the paramedic is basically him explaining what the transformation ray gun has done to Keris’ DNA and cell makeup so that she can get the most appropriate treatment.

I wanted to give each character at least one catch phrase, or recurring joke. Morty’s is his interest in dictating notes to Thirteen. He first did it on page XIX.

Because “don’t” appears five times in this strip, I thought about the Grindhouse trailer for the fake movie “DON’T” and decided to just title this page after it. This is the only page title in the series to appear italicized.

Jen’s face hadn’t been totally worked out at the time. She looks younger than intended. Her eyes are rather large and her nose and chin are less defined than her future appearances.

XXIV: “Cough” Spelled Correctly Looks Weird

“COUGH” looked strange for some reason, so I went with a more phonetic onomatopoeia.

In this bunch of strips I experimented with different colors of hair highlights to reflect the ambient light of the scene. Now that they’re outside, the highlights are either from the red lamps or the blue moonlight. This was just one of the little things I learned about working in full color for the first time.
