XLII: The Passing of Something

The title is a line from H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, specifically the John Wayne musical version. (Before he mucked it all up with “A New Generation”.) The line is: “Suddenly there was a change…the passing of something…and all that remained was this gaunt quiet.”

This is the last page that I colored until “Sister”, the mini-comic that ran between Chapters 4 and 5 in 2011.

That’s not Demetrius’ handwriting. (He wouldn’t have been able to write understandable sentences.) That’s a computer printout. It was just drawn sloppily.

The title is a reference to Mission: Impossible! I was a big fan of the show growing up. Please don’t get me started on the movies, though. Don’t even talk about them.

XL: The Quirky Quandries of Cashmere Calloway

This page was written to retcon an art continuity mistake in Chapter 1, where Cass was being drawn with inconsistent hair lengths. My friend Josh (who began coloring UTC strips starting with Chapter 3) pointed out the problem to me early on. I came up with an explanation on the spot, and from there I started drawing her hair longer and longer every page. By page XXVII, it’s past her shoulders. I had to tweak a little of strip XXVIII, which was finished months earlier, to make her hair there even longer. (Thereby perpetuating the mistake on purpose.)

Thanks to all of this, Cass’ hair grows so quickly she would have to cut it on a near-daily basis to keep it manageable.

I briefly considered changing the name of the series to “The Quirky Quandries of Cashmere Calloway” around this time. Fan feedback convinced me to stop searching for alternate series names and stick with “UTC”.

Forgive the awful double helixes in panel 7. That was a last-minute attempt to fill space.

XXXIX: The Simple Ways Are Always Best

We briefly explore contemporary social issues in this page. The original script here only called for a discussion on what the goat’s name was.

XXXVIII: Safety in Numbers

This part of the chapter was so fun to write. I’m always looking for opportunities to showcase the ridiculousness of this series.
